Textile Ranch is Glen Johnson aka Piano Magic. This substantially more playful and electronic release from Mr. Johnson is very much in the Static Caravan scheme of things, blending delicate melodies, folktronica and simple, organic rhythms with discrete, odd, cute sound effects. Anyone into Vanishing Breed, ISAN, Herrmann and Kleine, FortDax and (fairly obviously) Piano Magic will find this more than suitable. Nice one.

Déjà rencontré sur un précédent 7’’ et bientôt disponible sur la longueur d’un premier album, voici un nouveau deux titres vinyle du projet plus ou moins solo de la tête pensante de Piano Magic, Glen Johnson.
Deux instrumentaux font office ici de carte de visite, mi-électroniques, mi-fidèles aux grandes heures esthétiques des labels anglais 4AD et Factory. On les croit anodins dans un premier temps mais ils tournent en boucle rapidement et on a tôt fait de les identifier pour ce qu’ils sont, deux perles venant s’ajouter à la longue liste de petits miracles de ce musicien anglais. On profitera de l’occasion pour rappeler que le nom de son projet solo, Glen l’a emprunté à un autre groupe mythique anglais, Felt.
Glen Johnson est un des musiciens les plus impressionnants en activité de l’autre côté de la Manche, appartenant à la même génération que Hood ou Matt Elliott et tout aussi nécessaire. Il redonne foi en ce mot que l’on nomme « talent ».
Ces deux plages ressemblent à à des mécaniques idéalisées, des jouets automates partis dans des danses folles, des libellules virevoltant à la surface d’un étang, des hirondelles dessinant des arabesques dans le ciel tandis qu’à la recherche d’insectes.

Textile Ranch ist ja bekanntermaßen Glen von Piano Magic, der hier zwei Tracks droppt, die wie gemacht sind für eine 7″, die einen immer für die Länge einer Seite komplett in ihren Bann zieht und dann plötzlich ins Nichts entschwebt, so, als ob nie etwas gewesen wäre. So auch hier. Die A-Seite « Girl With A Numbered Heart » werde ich nie mitpfeifen können, aber einmal aufgelegt, erinnere ich mich sofort an die freundlichen Melodien und dieses Stück Pop. « Boy Climbing Skull » spielt so ein bisschen mit Arovane zu Beginn und leiert dann aus. Das klingt jetzt gemein, ist aber eigentlich nett gemeint.

The first of two releases for French label Lykill Records who return after a more than reasonable sabbatical, the other being by Swiss ensemble Velma, which boo hoo hoo we haven’t got. Still we managed to secure our copy of the latest offering from Piano Magic founder Glenn Johnson’s off shoot project, Textile Ranch, and a nifty thing it is to. Pressed on snow white vinyl and almost certainly limited, to how many who knows, but if you aren’t setting currency aside for its imminent purchase right now as we speak, then shame on you. ‘Girl with numbered heart’ unless my copy has an unlisted track, is split into two movements, both are splendidly affecting electronic instrumentals, the former at times to these ears sounds like a triumphal baroque re-tread of Add N to X’s menacing ‘The Regent is Dead’, all elegantly woven into a superbly executed processional like sheen, while not to be out done movement two incorporates a vibrantly buzzing dippy edge, alarmingly happy stuff that waltzes non-chalantly in it’s own Prozac fuelled haze, quite delicious. ‘Boys climbing skull’ over on the flip chills as much as it soothes, a bit like a grooving ISAN with winter warmers that soon morphs as if by magic into lullaby-esque territories with child-like glee, disarming to say the least and irresistible with it.

(…)Après ces deux compositions qui prennent à la gorge, il est vivement conseillé de se plonger dans l’électro ludique et fragile de Textile Ranch, projet derrière lequel se cache Glen Johnson en vacance de Piano Magic, mais dont les productions restent trop éparses et méconnues (seulement deux 7″ pour Static Caravan et Audraglint en quelques années d’existence). S’amusant avec ses machines et ce qu’il lui passe sous la main, Glen Johnson produit des mini-symphonies s’étirant en 2 longs mouvements à l’évolution complexe et subtile, pleines de candeur et de petites découvertes sonores. Rappelant les premières enregistrements de Piano Magic, Girl With Numbered Heart et Boys Climbing Skull proposent une promenades rêveuse et bucolique : les yeux écarquillés, on reste aux aguets du moindre bruit, excité par l’inconnu et émerveillé par la nature.

Here’s something for the die-hard fans of Piano Magic, if there are some among the people who read Vital Weekly? Textile Ranch is Glen Johnson from Piano Magic who makes some solo music occasionally and releases it on some very small and quite obscure labels, like Lykill this time. There are 2 (in a way) electronic tracks or songs on this release. Both very much in the most wonderful (even fetishist)
tradition of the handmade electro-melodic music which sounds like it’s coming from a nice music box. The first track ‘Girl with numbered heart’ starts from one point but from the middle it continues in a different way. The similar thing happens in the other track ‘Boys Climbing Skull’, the main theme goes through few changes. When I played this track on radio once, one of the people who work there asked me if I made this track myself!? That’s a compliment to me, although he didn’t say it in that way, he thought something like: « Aw c’mon, this is not serious music… ». What he knows… I think Global Goon should hear some Textile Ranch music.

(…)Suite à un silence prolongé, Lykill a décidé de sortir simultanément deux 45t. Glen Johnson signe donc la sixième référence du label sous le nom de Textile Ranch, peut-être plus connu à la tête de Piano Magic, groupe à géométrie variable avec lequel il a déjà sorti une quinzaine d’albums pour quasiment autant de labels [Staalplaat, i Ché, Rocket Girl, Acetone, Wurlitzer Jukebox, Bad Jazz…]. Textile Range compose ainsi deux pop songs électroniques pour boîte musicale. Deux morceaux biscornus mêlant le léger au complexe, le sombre à la lumière, le bucolique à l’artificiel, le tout nous laissant l’esprit rêveur, les yeux légèrement embrumés…

New single by Textile Ranch who is Master Glen Johnson from Piano Magic. This is really interesting sounding stuff – kind of electronic but tuneful and presumably made the old fashioned way. It wouldn’t be played in your local polished floor bottled lager emporium but that’s what makes it great. On Lykill Records as is Velma which is kind of in a similar vein. You’d class it under electronica but you get the suspicion that it wasn’t made by some faceless soul hiding behind a laptop….and incredibly it has vocals which immediately elevates it above the usual dull pap. This is really good and again I don’t want to bring M83 into it but I cannot understand how their rubbish album gets the accolades and this stuff is virtually unknown. All I can say is Buy this record.
